The history of this day began in the United States in the early 20th century. When a young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. Sonora, inspired by the concept of celebrating Mother’s Day, proposed a day to honor fathers. The first Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

The day became a permanent public holiday in the US after President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. Today, it is celebrated in most countries to honor fathers.
